Discover how your eyes reflect your health with Iridology.

Growing up, my Dad always told me he knew when I wasn’t telling the truth by the look in my eyes. When I began using Iridology as a tool in my naturopathic practice, I was amazed at the correlation between the patterns I saw in my clients eyes and their health. This allowed me to finely tune and tailor nutritional, herbal and lifestyle solutions for my clients like never before!

The History of Iridology

Since 1000BC, the iris has been a valuable source of information for those concerned with the practice of medicine, but it was during the 19th century that the technique was given a name by Ignatz von Pecezely, a Hungarian physician. He called it “Augendiagnostik” or eye diagnosis. In more recent times Bernard Jensen and Josef Angerer, the modern “fathers of iridology”, refined most of the techniques used by practitioners today (1).

Examining the iris (the coloured part of the eye) is usually done by digital photography or iriscope. It is viewed like a map, different areas of the iris corresponding to particular parts of the body. For example, the top part of the iris relates to the brain, the senses & other cognitive abilities. The area bordering the pupil is known as the autonomic nerve wreath (or ANW), and relates to the health of the bowel. Iridology practitioners also examine pupil size and shape, the sclera (white part of the eye) and any markings, holes or discolourations of the iris itself that provide clues to the past, present and future health of the individual.

Benefits of Iridology

Iris analysis provides valuable information regarding overall constitution, hereditary traits, past disease states, presence of toxins, lymphatic circulation, nutritional requirements or imbalances, status of the nervous system and health of the bowel.

Treatments can be prescribed based on a combination of iridology and appropriate case history, including nutritional and herbal remedies, lifestyle and other recommendations which are specific to each client. Although many parts of the iris do not change over time, it is possible to view alterations in detoxification & digestive status, stress and nervous tension, circulation and lymphatic health.

Limitations of Iridology

Iridology does not provide a basis for diagnosis. It does not show infection, pregnancy, specific conditions or diseases. Iridology is best used as supportive evidence alongside other techniques, such as bioimpedance analysis, pathology testing or medical imaging.  Iridology is, however, useful in discovering details of physical constitution, evidence of nervous system stress and tension, immune, detoxification and digestive issues.

Using Iridology in modern health practices is beneficial to assess the health of the client as an individual, rather than relying solely on other testing methods that too often generalise reference ranges and use a ‘one size fits all’ methodology.
